Recently, a concern was raised with us about gluten in a new brand of the ADHD medication dexamfetamine and the information about this ingredient being covered behind a pharmacy label. We have asked Pharmac for clarification on the issue of dexamfetamine brand changes and dietary allergens.
Pharmac have informed us that:
- A supply issue with the Noumed brand of dexamfetamine has required the previously-funded brand (Aspen) to be brought back temporarily.
- The new Aspen brand of dexamfetamine does contain gluten, whereas the Noumed brand does not. Medsafe has confirmed the source of gluten is wheat starch.
- Because Aspen dexamfetamine comes in large bottles, most pharmacies repackage it before dispensing. Sometimes pharmacies use the original packaging and place the pharmacy label over the information on the original packaging. Generally, pharmacists will be aware of coeliac patients and will work to prioritise these patients with the Noumed brand.
- Currently, there is a limited supply of the Noumed brand of dexamfetamine left.
- Pharmac has asked pharmacies to consider prioritising the Noumed brand for people with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance because of the presence of gluten in the Aspen product. Pharmac has also alerted prescribers in their prescriber updates. In response to this concern being raised, Pharmac has reissued its advice to pharmacies and prescribers.
The supply issue with Noumed dexamfetamine is expected to be resolved by mid to late June 2026.
