ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
ADHD was previously known as Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD). However, due to more research providing more understanding of its various aspects, in 1987, it officially became known as ADHD.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition (not a behavioural disorder) caused by the slower development of the frontal lobe, specifically the prefrontal cortex.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition (not a behavioural disorder) caused by the slower development of the frontal lobe, specifically the prefrontal cortex.
This "neurodevelopmental delay" to the prefrontal cortex makes automatically controlling and filtering attention, behaviours, and emotions so much harder. Other behaviours, such as restlessness, impulsivity or inattention, can also result from this delay.
To qualify ADHD as a disability, a diagnosis of ADHD in children must result in measurable functional impairments (which show up as repeated poor performance in school), and a diagnosis of ADHD in adults must result in measurable functional impairments that keep them from working. |
