Special Authority expiring and can’t get to a specialist in time? There may be a solution...
In our discussions with Pharmac, we have learned there is a waiver system which allows a General Practitioner (GP) to apply for an extension to a Special Authority (SA) number in certain circumstances.
So far, according to Pharmac, no GP has ever applied for a waiver for ADHD stimulant medication. Importantly the application for a waiver must meet with the intent of the SA process – i.e. a specialist appointment is booked but is some weeks or months away.
According to the College of GPs, this is not very well known, so you might need to tell your GP!
The Special Authority waiver information is on the Pharmac website.
There is no guarantee that your application for a waiver will be successful, but it is worth trying.
