Deciding whether someone has ADHD requires careful assessment and determination by a specialist, usually a paediatrician or psychiatrist, and is based on extensive data of developmental, learning, social and behavioural areas, drawn from a range of sources. The parent’s input is critical for an accurate diagnosis.
For a diagnosis of ADHD, some symptoms must have been present before 7 years of age. They have to present in more than one environment (i.e. at home and school) and be inappropriate for the age of the child and the setting.
