Supply issue with ADHD medication methylphenidate Concerta
UPDATE
NOTICE from Pharmac
08 December 2023
Subject: Update re Supply of Methylphenidate - Concerta
Kia ora,
The supplier of Concerta, Janssen, has expedited the next shipments for the 27 mg and 54 mg Concerta strengths.
Expected arrival in Aotearoa New Zealand:
We are hopeful this means people can continue to access their Concerta brand of methylphenidate.
We continue to ask prescribers and dispensers to return people to the Teva brand, where they were temporarily taking the Concerta brand. This will help maintain supply of Concerta for people who only have a Special Authority for Concerta.
We will continue to update our website with information about stock of both Concerta and Teva brands of methylphenidate.

NOTICE from Pharmac
01 December 2023
Subject: Re supply of Methylphenidate – Concerta
Kia ora,
We have been informed that supply of Methylphenidate – Concerta is now under pressure. This is due to increased global demand.
The supplier of Concerta has told us it cannot supply enough methylphenidate to cover the current demand in New Zealand in December. The next shipment of Concerta is due to arrive in New Zealand in January 2024.
Methylphenidate ER - Teva is available again in New Zealand and people who had moved to Concerta due to the recent supply issues for the Teva brand will be moved back onto that medication when they collect their next prescription.
Clinical advice indicated that people currently receiving Methylphenidate ER - Teva could be changed directly to the Concerta brand to bridge the supply gap and also return back to the Teva brand.
There are some people who only have a current Special Authority approval for Concerta so we need to ensure they have supply of Concerta for the summer holiday period.
We have asked prescribers and dispensers to change those people who have been temporarily taking the Concerta brand back to Methylphenidate ER – Teva at the next available opportunity.
We are working to ensure that those with a Special Authority approval only for Concerta would be able to access the Methylphenidate ER – Teva brand, if supply of Concerta is unavailable.

ADHD New Zealand will continue to keep this information updated regarding Concerta, as it comes to hand from Pharmac.
