ADHD NZ on Magic Talk: Over 80 percent of adults with ADHD Report struggling to get help, survey says
Most adults struggling with ADHD are also struggling to get the appropriate help for the neurological disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) causes the mind to lack focus and increase hyperactive and impulsive behaviours.

Though ADHD is one of the most common disorders affecting children, it is a long and often at times traumatic experience for those seeking diagnosis.

ADHD New Zealand Chairperson Darrin Bull was asked why psychiatrists are the first point of contact for people struggling when ADHD is defined as a neurological condition.

"That's a good question," Bull responded. "Why isn't the GP more involved? A lot of the issues with ADHD manifest themselves in behaviour. That in some regards is the stereotypical definition of ADHD.

"So they are able to help, which is good, because really psychologists and psychiatrists are really the only people in New Zealand that can help," he said.

"And that is a really big part of the problem, there isn't enough people to be able to help those with ADHD, and that's how you end up on Tik Tok & doctor Google"

Darrin Bull is referring to young kiwis who are turning to social media and google searches looking for help and advice about ADHD rather than a trained professional.

Listen to the full interview with Darrin Bull and Danny Watson (Magic Talk: 08 December 2021)
