"Adults with ADHD"
Family therapy
Family therapy may be required for several reasons:
- To address family dysfunction stemming from:
- Difficulty raising and mangaing an (previously undiagnosed) ADHD child.
- Parental/marital pathology.
- To look at new roles for individuals in the family unit.
- To address the welfare and/or any concerns of all involved.
Clinical models of family therapy have been made for families with ADHD members
(Ziegler & Holden, 1988).
Individual therapy
Once diagnosed, ADHD children themselves may need counselling. This counselling
would focus on:
- Low self esteem
- Demoralization
- Compliance to treatment
- Relationship issues
- Adaptation to issues created by ADHD
Sessions do not need to be a regular occurance, but evidence suggests that
episodic meetings are beneficial.
