"Timaru"

Carolyn's Bay

Timaru (approx. 26,000 people) lies less than two hours south of Christchurch. Declared a city in 1948, Timaru was originally named Te Maru, or "place of shelter" - Timaru was one of the few places along the eastern coastline where exhausted Maori paddlers (they travelled by canoe) could find sanctuary from the Pacific Ocean to rest.
